When a woman loaded down with jewelry disappears, who's to blame? That's the question we'll get to the bottom of in this review of the Sherlock Holmes mystery, 'The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax.

Have you ever heard the phrase, ''vanished into thin air?'' It basically means that something (or someone) has disappeared without a trace. In our story, ''The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax,'' that's exactly what has happened. A wealthy woman, Carfax herself, has seemingly vanished into thin air, and Holmes and Watson are on the case. Let's dive into the story.

In an unusual twist, Sherlock Holmes sends Dr. Watson ahead to Lausanne to figure out what has happened to Lady Frances Carfax, a descendant of a wealthy family, though not left with much besides jewels because she's a woman. She is unwed, yet worldly and well-traveled. In her travels, she makes time to write regularly to her former governess, Miss Dobney, but it's the occasion of no correspondence for five weeks that has people worried about Carfax's well-being.

As it turns out, Carfax has not even written a check recently, which further alarms people about her status.
